April 21–27 marks National Infertility Awareness Week, a movement to remove the stigmas and barriers that stand in the way of building families through education and engagement. We’ll be busting fertility myths each day this week on our blog and social media.

Want to join us in person? We’re hosting a Fertility Open House on the evening of April 23, a casual opportunity to drop by and talk with our team. And remember, you can always schedule a free call with a fertility advisor to get your questions answered one-on-one!

Did you know that cis women don’t fall off a fertility “cliff” at 35—but that there’s plenty of modern-day evidence for the decline in fertility with age?

When it comes to fertility, there’s a *lot* of information out there. Not all of it is accurate, and it can be difficult to sift through it all. That’s why we’re here—to be your fertility guide! We’re clearing up some myths and misconceptions about fertility and egg freezing.

Myth: Supplements, special diets, and superfoods can fix or prevent fertility issues.

Truth: There’s not much evidence that most lifestyle changes are silver bullets for infertility, and even *less* evidence that a healthy lifestyle, diet, tea, juice, or supplement can thwart the fertility decline that happens inevitably with age. (The one exception: smoking. Women who smoke reach menopause an average of four years earlier than non-smokers, so quitting now can actually improve your fertility “lifeline.”)

Healthy lifestyle changes are great, overall, but when it comes to fertility, age is a much stronger influence than what’s on your plate or in your medicine cabinet. Learn more.

Myth: Fertility is a “women’s issue.”

Truth: All too often, women take the brunt of the “blame” for fertility issues in hetero couples. The truth is, infertility is no one’s fault, and “male factor” is present in over a third of fertility cases. And yes—men’s fertility declines with age, too! Learn more.

Myth: Stress now can impact your fertility health later.

Truth: While stress may impact conception for those trying to get pregnant now (and evidence there is mixed), the effect is not long-term. Until ovulation, your eggs remain tucked away inside your ovaries, protected from the wear and tear the rest of your body weathers—stress included.

This is important: women who have difficulty getting pregnant sometimes feel guilt and shame because they believe they “worked too hard” or “stressed too much” earlier in their lives. If that’s you, it’s okay to let that go. Learn more about what affects your fertility here.

Myth: Fertility treatment and egg freezing is only for the wealthy (or those with really, really good insurance coverage).

Truth: It doesn’t have to be this way! Thanks to practices (like ours) disrupting the fertility industry, the cost of treatment is coming down, even for those without coverage. At Extend Fertility, our egg freezing cycle price is 40% less than the national average. Learn more about the cost of egg freezing.
